For someone going through treatment or living beyond it, breast cancer awareness doesn’t end when October does. Many survivors and those closest to them, think about breast cancer daily and it impacts every aspect of their life. They may be thinking about things like:
- Will I have a recurrence?
- Is my breast cancer genetic?
- Will my children end up with breast cancer?
- What if I can’t beat this?
These are hard questions. Hard questions to answer and hard questions to live with. So, keep these women and their families in mind beyond October. After you put away your pink and go back to business as usual until next October, remember those dealing with breast cancer never get to put it to the side. It’s always with them.
How to Help Breast Cancer Survivors Beyond October
You don’t have to wait until next October to help breast cancer survivors. There are things that can be done year-round to show your support and make a difference in someone’s life. Here’s how you can help:
BCN is always looking for volunteers to donate their time and talent. We can always use help at fundraisers or other events, but if that doesn’t interest you, consider chairing an event or being on our Board of Directors. We are always looking for talented individuals to join our Board that have specific skill sets to share. Aside from opportunities with BCN, there are many other organizations around town that support breast cancer patients and survivors so please consider volunteering.
If you know someone personally who is going through treatment, be supportive! Offer to help with cooking, cleaning, or other daily activities that might be too much for them to keep up with during treatment. And please, introduce them to us. We offer support groups, education and much more and we can be a great resource for someone going through treatment.
Host a Fundraiser
We get A LOT of support during October but we really need help all year. Our programming runs throughout the year taking a small break in the summer months. With that said, if you are looking for an organization to support at any time throughout the year, please consider the Breast Cancer Network of WNY. All the funds donated to us stay right here in WNY.
Getting yourself checked is way to stay engaged with the cause throughout the year. We know early detection is the best chance at changing the statistics for the better. If you get yourself checked and encourage others to do the same, you’re helping!
